This involves a bit of personal preference. I have had this ssame discussion with my computer guy. We both agree that for the price, performance, and reliability, HP seems to consistently offer the best computers. If you are not an HP fan, howver, I would advise you to stay away from acer's and eMachines. The only thing i've ever heard from acer is complaints about how cheap their laptops feel and operate. I would also defer you from eMachines because they are about as upgradeable as Macs ( not at all ). I own a HP desktop rig I've upgraded for hardcore gaming and it's great! I also own a Lenovo think pad and it's great for taking notes and browsing the internet. That leaves Toshiba... i have had little experience with Toshiba, but the experience I had was great! Although they do tend to be a bit pricey, their design and performance are top notch. The first one I used was for a graphic design class. It was a quad-core though so maybe that was part of why i liked it soo much haha. Hope this helped!
On a side note, it also heavily depends on what you will be using your computer for that will decide what is best for you!
