In reality, any dog can be great around kids - it is a matter of introducing the dog and the kids to each other slowly and setting ground rules for the kids (no shrieking, no hitting on the head, no pulling the tail, don't move quickly, etc). The dog also needs to be trained to be around children, which is covered in basic obedience classes.
