The most difficult task in gaining real knowledge is overcoming your own biases, your desire and inclination to believe a certain thing is true. It's very difficult to do this, and probably impossible to do completely. Overcome your need for certainty. Try to sense/recognize yourself looking away from an argument you don't like. Turn and stare at it directly and try to understand why you looked away. What was it you didn't want to hear about that argument. Often it will be because you didn't want to hear it so you could discount it and believe something else. All this requires an amount of practice, self awareness and immense self discipline few achieve.
An important factor in gaining real knowledge is listening to conflicting views and using critical thinking to try to determine which are more likely. You come with beliefs, don't go where it's comfortable, don't seek out those who agree with you, listen to the others. Experiment with being a devil's advocate for a view you don't believe. Try to hold up your end in a discussion with someone who holds the belief you start out with. If you were losing go back to the people who hold the belief you were trying to defend and come back better prepared to represent their belief.

knowledge, if not used is definitely useless. gaining knowledge is a waste in that case. also knowledge need to be of the correct sort. not abusive or offensive.
