What is the best microscope to buy for home or personal use?

In: Science

It really depends on what you will be using it for, how serious you are about your hobby and your budget.

One of my favorite places to get hobby/scientific supplies is Edmund Scientific http://www.scientificsonline.com/

You can shop online or order a hardcopy of their catalog.

They have a variety of microscopes and accessories, as well as cool educational toys, kits for science experiments and I buy robotic/mechanical supplies for my son there.

If they don't have what you need, just run a 'net search. There are plenty of science stores available on the net. But your best bet might be to look for a hobby science messageboard or ML and ask for advice.

Amazon.com has some pretty good microscopes, too.

Determining the best microscope is very subjective. However, you would do best by remaining with the big three companies that produce microscopes, Nikon, Leica, and Olympus if your budget allows.

Breaking it down by cost:

In my opinion, the best microscope is the Nikon Eclipse 200. It has superior optics and it is probably one of the easiest to use. I would vote the Nikon E 200 as "best microscope under $2000.00". It comes with a 5 year warranty and good support from Nikon. You can shop the internet. I've seen them as low as $1700.00 new and in the box.

If money is a major concern when purchasing a microscope, then I would reccomend the Leica C ME. It's an excellent microscope for students and smaller labs. This is extremely durable, and compact. It's ease of use is phenomenal. If you don't require plan objectives, this microscope is going to be your best bet.

Finally, if you are on a SERIOUS budget and need to find a microscope in the $500.00 range, you should look at the Accu-scope 3002. This microscope is ultra compact, and extremely well built. While Accu-scope is not one of the big three, they are an up and comming company who is constantly improving on their products. The Accu-scope 3002 is the best microscope in the sub $600.00 group. This is a great microscope for the hobbyist and student.

All of the above microscopes have carrying cases available for students who need to haul their scope back and forth. The best way to find the most affordable deal on the microscopes listed above is to simply use a browser such as google to locate a company that ships nationwide. So to recap the best microscopes: (In my opinion) 1) Nikon Eclipse 200 - Best Microscope under $2000.00 2) Leica C ME - Best Microscope under $1100.00 3) Accuscope 3002 - Best Microscope under $600.00
