A good hunting rifle must be

  • reliable
  • appropriate in caliber for your intended game
  • one you can shoot accurately and safely
  • within your budget

Given these considerations there is no one hunting rifle that is best for everyone in all situations.

It can vary from a Marlin in .22LR to a Holland & Holland in .600 Nitro Express, depending on what you are hunting, where you are hunting, how you are hunting, how experienced a shooter you are, and even your height and weight.

Most well known manufacturers produce rifles suitable for one type of hunting or another.

The most powerful rifle for civilian use in the United States is the 50 caliber Springfield. Magnum armor piercers fired from this rifle can go through one end of a tank and through with enough velocity to be lethal when it comes out the other side.

Any rifle with the correct high grade ammo in .358 Winchester or .35 Whelen on up, can do the job just fine, and many have been killed with the .30-06. The .35 Winchester in the model 95 Winchester was considered to be one of the best, and it is well below the power of the .358 Winchester, especially in the newest loads available. The .300 Winchester magnum or the .338 Winchester magnum are likely ideal, but they kick enough to make a brass monkey flinch, and are not for the average hunter. The other advantage of the .358 Winchester, is you do not need a long barrel or a heavy rifle to do the job. Unless you are shooting at distances of 300 yards, there really is no advantage to the big magnums, and they are also quite cumbersome to say the least.

A 300 mag or bigger to be on the safe side

Shotguns are typically used when hunting squirrels, but the best rifle to use for this are .22 caliber rifles. This gun is perfect in the way that it is very accurate if used correctly, inexpensive to practice with, and won't damage the meat with closer shots.

How can i Contrast deer hunting to elk hunting?

They are very similar. Deer and elk are much alike anatomically, though elk tend to be larger. For this reason, a different caliber gun may be required for an elk. Guns like a 7mm rifle will do fine for deer, but it's questionable for elk. A 30-06 is typically a good gun for both.

What the best caliber rifle?

The best caliber rifle is entirely dependent on what game you are hunting. For varmints (small pest animals like gophers, moles, and prairie dogs) as .22 LR would be appropriate. For deer and elk, I would chose one of the .30 caliber options, either 30.06 or .308. For moose, or cape buffalo, I might go up to a .454.
