Mackerel are normally caught by using a net. An alternative to using a net is a sabiki rig on a light weight rod with 6 lb to 12 lb test line, which originated in Japan and consist of a line with 4 to 6 small hooks dressed up with bright colored skirts of some sort of reflectant material. Sabiki rigs could be purchased at most sporting goods stores and tackle shops. This is a great way to catch mackerel and sardine off piers and docks. For best results when fishing off piers and docks is to cast it using 1/2 oz to 2 oz depending on currents and retrieve it slowly giving your rod two quick jerks and winding twice alternating. Mackerel is great bait fish for bigger sport fish such as Lincod and Wahoo.

∙ 13y agoIt depends on what kind of fish your trying to catch, i use luers, worms, and i think i might have used shrimp. I'm sorry to say though that i don't quite remember what kind of fish we cought with those baits. Hope i helped a little!
