Gene Autry's recording of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is second to Bing Crosby's White Christmas in sales of all Christmas songs. Roy Rogers had turned down the opportunity to record it and Gene did not want to, but his wife convinced him. It was recorded in one take in the final 10 minutes of a recording session and released as the 'B' side of If it Doesn't Snow on Christmas, which he was sure would be a hit. The 45 sold two million copies in 1949.
