Each type of medium has its pros and cons. Any more, all three are capable of high definition video. There is also a fourth type of medium that is becoming popular and that is hard drive camcorders. MiniDV's are the most common type of medium. They can store one hour of high definition video in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios, or one and one half hours of standard definition in both aspect ratios. In order to capture the tape to a computer, though, it must capture in real time through playback.

MiniDVD's are capable of the same recordable length of time but only certain types of miniDVD's can be re-recorded. Transferring video from a miniDVD to a computer is much faster because you can quickly copy a video file without playback.

Flash memory is the fastest type of medium for camcorders and the memory capacity is much larger than that of a miniDVD. The bad part of flash memory is that it has a limited number of write cycles so after so many times of recording, it will become impossible to read or write to the memory card. This can be a very bad thing if the flash memory is internal. If the camcorder write the information to a removable stick, though, this is usually not a problem. Flash memory's transfer rates are extremely quick but sometimes there can be loss of video quality. Flash memory will usually last a very long time so there is no need to worry about its lifespan.

The most recent form of medium that is still growing is the hard drive camcorder. These cameras have built in hard drives with large amounts of memory capacity that are capable of storing quite a few hours of high definition video in both full screen and wide screen aspect ratios. Transferring video clips from the camera to a computer is as simple as dragging and dropping a file.

How to Use a Camcorder In Low Light?

If you are like most camcorder owners, you have come to find that many of your recordings will take place in low-light. I’m sure you are frustrated by your results. However, here are a few tricks to recording in low-light conditions. The easiest solution is using the flash on your camcorder. I know it sounds simple, but there a great number of camcorder owners who wouldn’t even think of this. Most camcorders today come with a built-in flash. The first thing you want to do is to check your owner’s manual or your camcorder. If it doesn’t have a built in flash, you can purchase one at your local camera shop. Once you have determined you have a built-in flash, the next step is to check the flash settings. In some camcorders this comes up on the screen, for others, it may be located on the camera itself. Usually, there is a menu with options. The settings for the flash are in general are on, off, auto and manual. Most camcorder owners will use the auto setting. The more you comfortable you become with the flash, you may start switching to manual. You should also consider how bright your flash’s light is. It is always a good idea to test the flash before events if you can, so you can get perfect shots at events like weddings.Another feature with the flash is a light-mode setting, which aids in determining what type of light you are recording in. These settings allow you to set them for indoor or outdoor light. It can be a very handy feature. Some camcorders also have a setting to reduce those horrible red eyes you can get when recording, so be sure to check your menu of options. Here are a few final tips to remember when recording in low light:Check your camcorder for a built in flashIf you have a built in flash check your settingsPractice if you can in the area you will be recordingCheck for any additional settings your flash may have
