The Morphy Richards/Goblin Aztec series of vacuums are good for this,they are small and compact and have a leg the flips our underneath so they will stand upright on stairs.A good light but powerful vacuum,bags and filters are cheap and available everywhere (The most important thing when buying a vacuum is bag and filter availability)
Hope that helps,they are a good solid little cleaner that wont break the bank,their customer service is excellent too,I managed to break mine and they sent me complete new vacuum even though the warranty had run out! totally free!
