Cleaning a coin is never advised,.. it will lose some if not all of it's collectable value.

any scrubbing or even rubbing will flatten the coins surface and change it's natural appearance, and once done the natural luster can never be restored.

with that said, I have boiled "dirty" coins and removed the dirt and crud, the tarnish stays intact., Olive oil will loosen some tarnish and dirt without damaging the surface as much.

anything more aggressive will damage the coin and seriously harm it's real value.

Put them in vanish mixed with water.

Use water with some white vinegar in it. Remove coins as soon as they are shiny. However, if these are collectibles, you may want to explore other products.

DON'T TRY TO CLEAN COINS WITH HOME CHEMICALS!!!!!!Any chemical you use will damage the coin's surface and reduce or even eliminate its value to a collector!!

The simple answer is to

never ever clean a coin

If you clean a coin, you risk completely damaging and destroying its value. A lot of times when people see an old coin as "dirty" it really just has toning on it. If you clean a coin you really risk reducing its value by tens or even hundreds of dollars.

I would suggest you going to a coin dealer first and getting an appraisal of your coins and see if the coin dealer suggests you to clean them. If so, they should have a container of coin cleaner that you can purchase which will do the least amount of damage to the coins. But seriously, do not clean coins, you only risk damaging them and losing money. A cleaned coin will never be worth more than an uncleaned coin (metal detecting finds aside).
