Diamonds are a girl's best friend and they're no stranger to men either. Because they are so expensive, knowing how to care for them properly is an important part of owning them.
To clean your diamond, prepare a bowl of warm water and add a gentle dish soap. Stir the water and soap until it becomes sudsy. Soak the piece of diamond jewelry for about five minutes. After the jewelry has soaked, brush it with a soft bristled toothbrush to get the dirt off. After you have scrubbed the piece, rinse it with clean water and let it dry on a paper towel or in a colander.
In order to avoid damage to your diamond and to prevent your diamond from becoming excessively dirty, avoid wearing your diamond when cooking, doing yard work and performing other harsh activities. With proper care and maintenance, your diamond should last you forever.
Another option is to buy a Sonic Jewelry cleaner, it's a small machine that you fill with water along with a soap solution, the machine vibrates at high speeds and vibrates any grime/dirt off of your jewelry- Remember, NO pearls in the Sonic Cleaner!
The processes suggested are good ones but I personally feel if you want to keep the diamond sparkle and glow. You need to clean the diamond on regular basis and only with wet cloth. Regular cleaning will never allow dust particle or chemicals to settle on the surface and hence there will not be any need to go for such expensive techniques.
-To add to the above comments, if you decide to go with a Sonic or Ultra Sonic cleaner, be sure there are no loose stones in your jewelry. If there are, there is a good chance they will come out because of the vibrations. Also, do not put pearls, emeralds, aquamarine, tanzanite or any other soft stones or gems in as the heat will crack them.
-Other at home remedies which I've found to be quite common and I definitely do not recommend are brushing jewelery with a tooth brush and tooth paste. Gold is very soft and the gritty texture of the paste will scratch it. And, do not soak jewelry in anything other than a mild detergent as stated in the previous answer. Some chemicals will eat right through the gold setting.
Whenever you clean jewelry containing a diamond, clean it over a cloth, so that if the stone is loosened by your efforts, you don't lose the stone down the drain, for example.
Ammonia from the bottle cleans grime and soap scum off metal and diamonds. In a small bottle, pour in enough un-diluted ammonia to cover the jewelry, soak it for a few minutes, then lid the bottle and shake it. Then, if necessary, you can use a tooth brush or other small brush to dislodge the loose dirt. Rinse completely under running water, and wipe dry.
You can also use a steam-jet cleaner to blast the dirt off the jewelry.
Don't clean other precious stones this way, because other stones, such as rubies, emeralds, and other materials, such as opals and pearls, are more porous and can absorb the ammonia and/or water.
Let me give you an easier way that we advise our clients and they have confirmed (over time) it is one of the easiest cheapest and most effective ways to clean a diamond ring and keep it sparkling.

All one needs is a toothbrush, hand washing liquidand a clean cloth. Apply a small amount on the toothbrush (after wetting it) and gently brush the diamond and the prongs holding the diamond to clean any dirt around the prongs. Do this for about a minute and then take a cloth and wipe it dry. Ofcourse have a cloth underneath the diamond ring incase the diamond is loosely fitted.
Ideally this should be done sitting down on a table.
Thats it and the sparkle will return - Good as new !
The best and safest way do clean diamonds at home is to use a solution of warm water mixed with a few drop of ammonia in which to soak your diamond jewelry. Gentle scrubbing with an old, soft-bristled toothbrush is useful for more extensive cleaning. Rinse and dry with a clean soft cloth.
Mix warm water and dishwashing soap together and soak your diamond for about 20 minutes. Take the diamond out and gently clean it with a soft toothbrush and then rinse it under water and let it air dry.

There is no easy answer you can always loose a diamond no matter how many precautions you take. However, by keeping it clean (free from grease etc.) it will have less chance to fall out. Also every couple of years it is smart to bring it in to a jewler and have them check it out to make sure it isn't loose.
