Vaccuum up what you can and then you are going to have to shampoo the carpet.
Be careful, because the vacuum cleaner could push the soot deeper into the carpet. Better to use a steam cleaner and add 1/2 to 3/4 cup baking soda to the water/detergent per gallon.
