The sneakiest way I've ever heard of was really quite simple. Send them a nice letter (you know, antique eMail) saying how much you admire their work and say that you are naming your new son/daughter after them. I'm sure it doesn't always work, but supposedly someone got a lot of hand-signed responses this way.
