That task is going to be pretty hard, but not impossible. I'm sure you've heard the saying 'You can't teach a dog new tricks' explaining how it's hard to break habits. With some work and dedication you can break this one.
Keep the litter box in one place, so the cat always knows where it is and doesn't get confused. Place the cat in the litter box like you would do a kitten. I assume the cat is messing in the house or yard. Pick up all the feces and place it in the litter box, to associate the litter box with going to the bathroom. *Do not pick up the feces, show it to the cat, and scold him/her for messing in the house. The cat will associate that going to the bathroom anywhere is bad.

∙ 12y agoWhen you notice your cat needs to go to the toilet, lightly push/direct them to the litter box, or even carry them if necessary. If they go to the toilet on the floor/furniture etc, disepline immedietly and next time act before they poo/wee. When they do use the litter box praise them with food or a toy to show them, they are doing the right thing. It could take a while for your cat to fully understand but they will eventually learn. Also try to avoid letting them out if all they want to do is go to the toilet. You can learn their distinctinve meows so for future refrence, when you hear this meow direct them to the litter box instead of letting them out :)

I have a cat and the best way to rid your place of the odor is one use baking soda in the liter box and or you can use the tidy cat liter and then you would not have to worry about using an air freshener, the tidy cat liter does it for you.
