Wine for a Connoisseur

  • Go to a specialty wine store and ask for their advice. Usually most people enjoy 00 - 01 sweetness. There are so many great wines on the market so the pros can help you select one. Good wines don't have to come from France, Greece, etc., as the U.S. and Canada make some pretty awesome wines of their own. One thing Canada has is what they call "ice wine" and it's like a liqueur and either the person is really going to enjoy sipping it or really won't like it. It's expensive! I usually get a red and white wine for our guests. White wine should be chilled, and red wine should be room temperature. My husband loves wine and makes some of the best wine around. We give a couple of bottles to our close friends and it's a treat! When I buy wine for someone who I know drinks a lot of wine, I usually try to find an unusual wine that is not commonly found. If I know the type of wine they like best, I try for a bottle of that particular type of wine. A great wine to find some unique bottles of wine is to take a wine tasting tour to wineries. It is often possible to find some great wines that are only available directly from the winery.
  • If you get a white wine, it's best to not bring it chilled. This will make the host feel they have to serve it, and most hosts (especially a connoisseur) will already have their wines planned in advance to match their meal. I would choose a wine that can be aged for a considerable amount of time, usually a red.
  • The myth of French wine superiority was destroyed in 1976 when the best wine experts in France selected California wines as superior to the best in France. The wine expert Robert Parker asserts that the very best Sauvignon Blanc wine in the world is produced in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. The best Pinotage wine in the world comes from South Africa, and the list goes on and on.
  • And don't fall into the trap of thinking that you have to spend a lot of money. Blind taste tests repeatedly demonstrate that many of the world's best wines are produced in the New World. In addition, blind taste tests also repeatedly demonstrate that price is not correlated well with the quality of wine. Producers sometimes raise prices to increase sales! That's only possible because people falsely assume that more expensive wine must be better.
  • In short, don't get suckered by pretentious and pompous wine snobs. It's much more fun to give (or receive) gifts of unusual wines or wines with interesting stories.
  • Sometimes its better to ask them what type of wine they like where the wine is from, armed with this information and knowing what kind of money you want to spend go to a good local independent wine shop explain to them the information you know and hopefully they can recommend something for you.
  • Wines from the Rothschild vineyard are well-regarded in the wine industry. The Rothschild wine had bottle labels designed by Picasso and some of the most famous artists in the world. (Rothschild did better than any other French red wine in the competition against California red wines. Judges couldn't see the expensive Picasso label.) The wines from the bordeaux region are also considered to be very valuable and tend to increase in value over time.
