What is the bible scripture that say you can live in the world but not be of the world?
John 15:17-19 says that Christians are 'no part of the world', just as Jesus was 'no part of the world' and because of this, the world will hate them, as it hated Jesus.
John 17:13-18 Jesus prays to his father not to take his followers out of the world, but to watch over them, because they are 'no part of the world'.
Clearly, being 'no part of the world' does not mean LEAVING it. It means that Christians should not participate in any part of worldly society that goes against God's principles and direction.
Jesus did not want his disciples to become antisocial, avoiding contact with non-Christians. Actually, isolation would prevent a Christian from fulfilling his commission to preach and teach "publicly and from house to house."-Acts 20:20; Matthew 5:16; 1 Corinthians 5:9, 10.
At James 1:27 the Bible tells Christians to keep "without spot from the world." The Scriptures clearly warn that 'friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world is constituting himself an enemy of God.' (James 4:4)
Christians must separate themselves from the part of human society that is alienated from God. (2 Corinthians 6:14-17; Ephesians 4:18; 2 Peter 2:20.) and shun attitudes, speech, and conduct that conflict with God's righteous ways, such as the world's avid pursuit of riches, prominence, and excessive indulgence in pleasures. (1 John 2:15-17)
So, to be 'no part of the world' means to stay separate from all parts of human society that conflict with God's will, while fulfilling the commission to lovingly preach and teach unbelievers about God's purpose.
