The world's largest (longest) staircase is actually in the Swiss Alps on Mount Niesen. It has 11,674 steps and is used by service personnel to access the funicular (tram) that runs up the mountainside. It is also used for a yearly race. It runs up the side of Mount Niesen, parallel to a funicular (a small rail car that is pulled up the side of a mountain) that takes sight seers up to the top of mountain. It is composed of 11,674 steps and is open to the public just once a year. It was built in 1910.
Mount Niesen is in Bernese Oberland part of the Alps.
