Back bears are generally the top predator in their local environment. This means they prey on herbivores (deer, rabbits etc.) to keep teir numbers down. Interestingly in areas such as British Columbia which has many salmon rich streams, they eat immense quantities of fish then relieve themselves in the woods. This waste provides a source of nitrogen for the trees in the area.

Bears in general (black or polar or grizzly) are aggressive toward humans. A bear is a very dangerous animal and will most likely kill any human it encounters since they are easily threatened. They do not usually kill humans as prey. They rely extensively on their sense of smell to track threats like other bears and humans. Bears are thought to have the best sense of smell of any animal on earth. For example, the average dog's sense of smell is 100 times better than a humans. A blood hound's is 300 times better. A bear's sense of smell is 7 times better than a blood hound's or 2,100 times better than a human. Contrary to popular opinion, research shows black bears do not attack menstruating women across all ages. No research has been conducted with respected to grizzly bears, but free-ranging polar bears detected and consumed food scent samples and used tampons, but ignored non menstrual human blood and unused tampons. This suggests that polar bears are attracted to odors associated with menstrual blood.

Negative, since humans don't like to live in the same area as a black bear. Black bears are often known to be quite aggressive and dangerous to the point where they've caused a lot of injuries and fatalities. As a result, bears are hunted and killed because they are feared to become repeat offenders to the next humans that get injured or killed by a bear.
