A stroke is a blockage of an artery by either a blood clot or an embolism. It can occur pretty well anywhere in the body. Most people think of the brain when they hear the word 'stroke'. But it can occur in the lungs, or just about any other organ.

"Stroke" is a general description of a circulatory"event" in the brain, just as "Heart Attack" is, in the heart. It can be either the interruption of blood flow, due to a clot, which slows or stops blood flow to an area of the brain, causing tissue damage in the areas that are not getting blood, -or- an interruption of blood flow due to leakage of blood into the surrounding tissue. In that case, the damage is due to pressure of the accumulating fluid, in a place it does not belong. There may be damage in the areas "downstream" that are not getting supplied with blood and oxygen, as well.
