After the Mexican-American War, the United States gained a large amounts of land. As a result, slavery issues began to arise. Southerners want the Mexican Cession (the name of the territory gaimed by the U.S. during the Mexican-American War) to be slave territories. Northerners, on the other hand, want it to be free territories. Another issue arise when it was announced that gold was found in California. As many citizens scrambled to California for the gold, the population was large enough that California could enter the Union. Southerners want California to enter the Union as a slave state, while Northerners want California to enter the Union as a free state. To resolve these issues, Senator Henry Clay propose the Compromise of 1850, a series of laws. There are five parts to the Compromise of 1850, which are: # California would enter the Union as a free state. # The rest of the Mexican Cession would be divide into New Mexico and Utah in which popular sovereignty would determine the slavery status. # Texas would give up its land claim west of the Rio Grande in exchange for financial assitances. # Slave trade, but not slavery, would be abolished in the nation's capital. # The old fugitive slave law would be replaced with a new, more effective one.

The 1820 Missouri Compromise was the result of the US Congress to keep the number of slave states and the number of free states equal. This came about when Missouri wished to enter the Union as a slave state, unbalancing the free and slave state ratio. As a result, Main was created as a state from northern Massachusetts . This then restored the free state slave state ratio.

The Slave vs. Free State debate. Missouri wanted to enter the union as a slave state, but naturally the Northerners, who opposed slavery, didn't want those who supported slavery to have more power. Thus the Missouri Compromise was drafted. It stated Missouri could enter as a slave state if Maine could enter as a free state.

The cause or better said the reason was that the US in total, wanted to end rifts over slavery. The Missouri Compromise of 1850 was put together in order to maintain the balance between free states and slave states. This compromise was a moot point as in 1854 the Kansas Nebraska Act called for citizens in territories to vote before the territories became states. They would either vote pro-slavery or anti-slavery.

The issue of slavery in the US continued from its earliest beginnings in Jamestown in 1620. In order to have every state ratify the new US Constitution, the issue of slavery was spoken about and no decision of substance could be made. The only small positive that came of it was the importation of slaves would end in ten years. World wide, slavery was legal and it was not until 1828-30 that the UK abolished slavery with compensation paid to slave owners.By 1819, the 22 states in the USA were evenly divided with 11 states that allowed slavery and 11 did not.

In 1819, the territory of Missouri, acquired via the Louisiana Purchase had the 60,000 population required to apply for statehood. Missouri was a slave territory and its entry to the US would cause an imbalance in slavery in the USA. A compromise was needed.

In order to keep the previous balance intact, the Congress decided in 1820 to admit Missouri in as a slave state and the northern part of Massachusetts was divided to create a new free state of Maine. Thus by compromise the 1820 Missouri Compromise was created.
