A virus known as the human immunodeficiency virus (or HIV). First people get infected with HIV and then after a while (sometimes years) they develop AIDS or acquired immune deficiency syndrome. When the person has AIDS they are more susceptible to diseases which healthy people can fight off better such as tuberculosis and many other infectious diseases.
