A fistula is an abnormal connection or passageway between two epithelium-lined organs or vessels that normally do not connect. It is generally a disease condition, but a fistula may be surgically created for therapeutic reasons.
Various causes of fistula are:
anal fistula
trauma
It is safe to go from the vagina to the anus during sex. But if you go from the anus BACK to the vagina, bacteria from the anus can cause urinary tract infection or bladder infection. Use a condom. Make sure you use a new condom when going from anus to vagina during sex. If you are trying to conceive, make sure the male cleanses his penis with mild soap and warm water before making the switch back to vaginal sex.
There is a condition, quite common after childbirth and often left untreated in third world countries, called a rectovaginal fistula where the wall between the vagina and anus can become compromised and leakage can occur; normally allowing fecal matter to enter the vagina. In the case of a Vesicointestinal fistula there is a compromise between the bladder and the bowel and could cause urine to collect in the lower bowel.
One cause of pain in your anus when you cough is the presence of hemorrhoids. A hemorrhoid is a swollen vein inside your anus.
Yes, a forceful kick to the anus can potentially cause trauma to the blood vessels in the area, leading to the development of hemorrhoids. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms like bleeding, pain, or swelling in the anal area after such an injury.
Yes, on the arm opposite the fistula. Never on the same arm as the fistula
A fistula is often caused by infection due to mechanical damage although there are other causes. Untreated injuries that become infected and have a tract (fistula) that permits drainage of pus and contaminants from the injury can relieve pressure from a wound or abscess revealing the need for treatment. The fistula itself is an indication of an underlying issue which may or may not be dangerous.
closure of Gastrocolic fistula
DefinitionA gastrointestinal fistula is an abnormal opening that allows the contents of the stomach or intestines to leak.If it leaks through to a part of the intestines, it is called an entero-enteral fistula. If it leaks to through to the skin, it is called an enterocutaneous fistula.Alternative NamesEntero-enteral fistula; Enterocutaneous fistula; Fistula - gastrointestinalCauses, incidence, and risk factorsMost gastrointestinal fistulas occur after surgery. Other causes include:Gastrointestinal obstructionInflammatory processes, such as infection or inflammatory bowel disease (most often Crohn's disease)Radiation to the abdomen (most often given as part of cancer treatment)Trauma, especially penetrating wounds such as those due to a stabbing or gunshotSymptomsDepending on the part of the intestines that are leaking, gastrointestinal fistulas may cause diarrhea, malabsorption of nutrients, and dehydration.Entero-enteral fistulas may have no symptoms.Enterocutaneous fistulas cause leakage of intestinal contents through an opening in the skin.Signs and testsBarium swallow(to identify a gastrointestinal fistula)Barium enema(to identify a fistula involving the colon)CT scan of the abdomen (to identify fistulas between loops of the intestines or an area of infection, called an abscess, associated with the fistula)Fistulogram (involves injecting contrast dye into the opening of the skin of an enterocutaneous fistula and then taking x-rays)TreatmentSome fistulas close on their own after a few weeks to months. Depending on the situation, some people may need to receive nutrition through a vein while the fistula heals. In some cases where the fistula is not healing, surgery is necessary to remove the fistula and part of the intestines.Expectations (prognosis)How well a patient does depends on their overall health and the cause and severity of the fistula. In otherwise healthy people, the outlook is excellent.ComplicationsFistulas may result in malnutrition and dehydration, depending on their location in the intestine. They may also be a source of skin problems and infection.Calling your health care providerCall your health care provider if you have a significant change in bowel habits, especially severe diarrhea. Also call if you have any leakage of fluid from an opening on the abdomen or near the anus, especially if you have recently had abdominal surgery.ReferencesStenson WF. Inflammatory bowel disease.
