I have heat that comes and goes in the bottom of my right foot. I have read somewhere that this could be a nerve problem extending down from the lower lumbar region. This would make sense to me as I do suffer with chronic lower back problems.

It sounds like you are describing a neuroptathy. It can have many causes such as diabetes, thyroid problems, vitamin B12 deficiency, inflammatory/ autoimmune problems, certain cancers and others.
You should see your doctor.

You could also have Athlete's Foot, which is a fungal infection that will cause intense burning and itching. As the previous poster said, it's best to see your doctor to be sure.
well im not positive, but im pretty sure your feet get hot because your feet release the most heat, and in shoes the heat stays there and builds up causing your feet to heat up and sweat.
