Perhaps the question is referring to the Pacific Ring of Fire which refers to the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that cover a large area of the basin of the Pacific Ocean. This particular Ring of Fire is a result of plate tectonics and general movement and collisions of the Earth's crust. "I fell into a ring of fire, I went down, down, down, the flames went higher and it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire...the ring of fire".
The Ring of Fire, is a tectonic plate, bounded by, naturally, a series of subduction zones. Beyond the subduction zones, the descending plate partly melts, and the blobs of molten material rise to the surface, creating the volcanoes giving us the name.

Where tectonic plates meet, you have volcanic and earthquake activity, usually because the plates move apart, collide, slide above or below each other, or slide laterally against each other. This unleashes tremendous amounts of energy, the amount usually pending on the size of the faults and plates.

These tectonic plates tend to move a lot which causes drastic changes in land portions above the sea. The movements and collisions in the tectonic plates directly result to the tsunamis or volcanic eruptions. The Pacific Ring of Fire includes a lot of small islands which stretches from New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, Indonesia, the northern Philippines, Japan, Alaska, western Americas, South Americas.
