There is a 3 group of stars closest to the sun called alpha centauria but one of those stars has been officially put in that proxima centauria is now the closest star to the sun.
I think this discovery was made in 2009 but not 100percent sure when discoveryy was made.
Interseting fact: Did you know in 15,000,000,000 years the sun will turn into a supernova and explode causing Mercury and venus to die, possib.y earth to. Then it will turn into a black hole and suck up things. We wont be alive then anyway.
The closest permanent thing to the Sun that we know of is the planet Mercury, although the asteroid Icarus has an elliptical orbit that sometimes brings it closer to the Sun than Mercury. Mercury is so close to the Sun that it takes less than three months (88 days) to orbit the Sun. It is never far from the Sun in the sky, so it can only be seen early in the morning, before sunrise, or early in the evening just after sunset. During the day time, Mercury's surface is hot enough to melt lead. Close to the Sun indeed!
It is possible that many asteroids exist within Mercury's orbit, that astronomers are calling vulcanoids. Although no vulcanoids have ever been discovered, we know that vulcanoids - if they exist - must be made up mostly of metal, as rock is unstable at very high temperatures.
Astronomers in the 19th century noticed Mercury was not following the orbit they had calculated for it, and believed that another planet, closer to the Sun, was pulling Mercury off course with its gravity. They named this planet Vulcan, after the Roman god of fire and Metallurgy, and decided that the reason nobody had discovered it was because it was too close to the Sun to be seen in the sky. Vulcan was "discovered" once, but it has never been found since, and astronomers now agree that Vulcan does not really exist. Einstein's theory of General Relativity soon provided the explanation for why Mercury was moving off course - without having to introduce a new planet!
