Charles II of England granted William Penn a large tract of land in America. This land included Pennsylvania and Delaware. Colonists pledged allegiance to him as their new patron and the first general assembly was set up and held in the colony. Dissenters who did not want association with the Quaker religion of Penn soon split and set up their own assembly in what is now Delaware.
