The conflict in West Side Story is the conflict between "natives" and "immigrants." In this case the natives are the white Jets and the immigrants are the Puerto Rican Sharks, both street gangs in late 1950s New York City. The story, and the conflict, is a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the rival families recast as rival street gangs.

In West Side Story, Maria and Tony fall in love. Unfortunately, they belong to gangs that are currently at war. Maria's gang, the Sharks, is a threat to Tony's gang, the Jets. Basically, it's a modern version of Romeo and Juliet.

The conflict in 'West Side Story' is between two gangs. In 'Romeo and Juliet', on which 'WSS' is based, the conflict is between two families.
