∙ 10y agoAn interpretation of the contour lines gives us an idea of the gradient of the data being presented. The contour lines on the weather map represent points of equal pressure. The contour lines of the lines of magnetic force on the surface of the Earth give some insight to the interior of the Earth.
Contour lines were first used (as far as I know) in the Schiehallon Experiment, which was an attempt to measure the mass of the Earth. For the measurement of the volume of the small mountain, the concept of slicing the mountain into a set of equal-height countours.
