In an electrically neutral atom, the number of electrons is the same as the number of protons. Since the number of protons is the atomic number of an atom, and Beryllium has an atomic number of 4, this means that Beryllium has 4 protons in its nucleus. As mentioned previously, if the atom is electrically neutral, then Beryllium will also has 4 electrons.

Beryllium has 4 electrons in its chemically stable state. When it's combining with other substances, many people only consider the valence electrons (Beryllium has 2) or the outermost electrons. The number of valence electrons is most easily recognized based on the Group number of that element (excluding the transition metals). Group one has one valence electron and Group 7 has seven valence electrons.
