A hash mark is given for completing a certain number of years of police service. The number of years per mark varies from one department to the next. My agency issues a new hash mark for every four years of service (5 hash marks = 20 years of service). Other standards are one mark per five years and one mark per three years.

You don't wear hash marks on blouses, only jackets. Service stripes (hash marks) are placed lower edge of bottom strip ½" above point of cuff, one for every four years of service on jackets/coats.
