Australia enjoys a high standard of living, being categorised as a high-middle income country by the OECD, but that does not mean it is expensive to live there. The cost of living is comparable to that of the USA. In 2002, Mercer Human Resource Consulting undertook research which indicated that, together with New Zealand, Australian cities are still the cheapest in which to live, but have the highest quality of living. Sydney (capital city of New South Wales) is the only one of Australia's cities which rates among the world's 100 most expensive cities, at 95.

It all depends on your age, are you skilled (i.e. have you got any qualifications). It's relatively cheap. Coming from New Zealand, i constantly hear that Australia is cheaper to live in, has better weather and pays higher. So once again, it all really depends on who you are.

it cost me my wife and 3 kids just over 6000 Pounds to visit Sydney for 3 weeks,

in my state that's cheap seen as im a pilot
