In the official 2010 census, released on December 21, 2010
there were 308,745,538 residents of the United States.
This figure is dated as of April 1, 2010 (but is not a joke).

(This presumably does not include between 20 and 30 million undocumented and therefore uncounted immigrants illegally in the country.)

The Congressional Apportionment total is higher, because it includes overseas members of the armed forces (and civilian members of the government) in their latest home state. For purposes of apportionment of representatives, the total is 309,183,463.

As of December 20, 2010, the estimated population of the United States
was over 310, 950,000. (see related link for current update)
