The current answer since it was first scaled in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary is at about a whopping 9% or so. The death rate has dropped to less than half of that in recent years, But of about over 1900 attempts by 1300 people, about 179 have died. It does not seem like something a sane person would do, to climb a mountain "because its there", as the saying goes.

There has been around 280 people die on Mount Everest while trying to reach or return from the highest summit in the world. The most famous two are George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. Many of their body’s are in view from the route used to ascend and descend from the summit.
