Geothermal systems are highly efficient.
The only outside energy required is for components of the geothermal unit. Half of the energy from the sun that hits the earth every day is absorbed by the ground. The result is that the ground remains at a constant temperature of between 10 and 15 Degrees C all year round at a depth of six feet below the surface. A geothermal system consists of a geothermal unit, generally located in the basement of a house, which is connected to a Ground Loop that is buried in the earth. Water circulating through the loop pipe absorbs the heat from the ground and takes it back into the house. The geothermal unit transfers the heat to air that is drawn through the unit and blows the warm air around the house using standard air ducts. Alternatively, the heat is distributed through pipes containing water for infloor heating. In the summer, the process reverses. Heat is taken from the air in the house and put in the ground, which is now cooler than the air.
Geothermal heating is usually where water is run through layers of the earth and the water is used to obtain a desired temperature used to heat your home or area that you would like to be heated.
heat under the ground used to heat water and make steam to turn generator turbines and make electricity.
Geothermal
Can be anywhere from warm (90 F) to boiling (212F). Depends on the geothermal energy heating the water, how much water flows through the heating area (more is cooler) and how far the water travels. Some hot springs in Alaska are comfortable to swim in, some is Iceland are so hot you can cook eggs in them.
Geothermal ( apex )
Geothermal energy is a renewable and inexpensive way to heat homes and businesses. It is useful mostly for those in the immediate are of the source, however.

There are a lot of resources online where you can obtain information on geothermal heating and cooling. One such website is http://geothermal-pa.com/. In reviewing this site, I noticed a wealth of information regarding "green" ways to heat a building as well as various articles on this same topic of geothermal heating and cooling.
