"Travelers" are the two switched wires running between three-way (or four-way) switches to operate lights from multiple locations. Depending upon circuit configuration (swx/swx/lt or swx/lt/swx), the third wire in a "3-way" cable could be either "hot" or "neutral" at all times and the bare copper wire is always for safety grounding.
