If you're talking about a diatomic COMPOUND, it is simply a compound composed of two atoms or elements. [Di=two :) ] But if you're talking about a diatomic MOLECULE, it is a molecule consisting of 2 atoms, but only 2 non-metals since a molecule is a neutral group of atoms joined together by covalent bonds. There shouldn't be a metal, since that is not a molecule; a metal plus a non metal forms an ionic bond which isn't neutral because it has a certain charge.
