A knight was (and still is) a member of the aristocracy - in the medieval period, the ruling class. They were and are entitled to have their own individual coat of arms and at that time a personal entourage of troops, servants and perhaps a squire training for knighthood. Knights came in a range of different ranks from knight bachelor to earl and some were extremely poor, without lands or money of their own.

"Medieval" is defined as the period between the end of the ancient/classical era and the modern era, but there are no specific set dates for these.

Not necessarily. The title of knight was and is a bestowed order of chivalry. Some knights were nobles or could be raised to the nobility through family ties or as a reward for heroic deeds, but most knights were retained (paid) by the nobility.

A knight did have to come from an aristocratic family. They underwent years of training, and had to distinguishthemselvesmilitarily to be awarded the title of knight.

Not all male aristocrats became knights. Most did receive military training, but not all had the talent ortemperamentfor military life. As the middle ages progressed it became increasingly common to substitute a cash payment to a feudal lord in place of actually military service. This was known as scutage, which was used to hire either a landless knight or common soldiers.
