What is the definition of an assist in basketball and when does it occur? In: Basketball |
Answer
What I was taught playing basketball in the late 70's and early 80's was an assist is when someone passes you the ball and you do not take a dribble, you shoot and score. That is an assist!
The NCAA takes a different view:
An assist is the principal pass that contributes directly to a field goal, according to the 2005 edition of the NCAA Basketball Statisticians' Manual. The pass must be a major part of the play. Only one assist may be awarded for each field goal. The decision rests with the judgment of the official game statistician. Dribbling by the scorer is irrelevant. The official assist pass need not be the last pass in the play.
