The term 'melting pot' comes from the idea of taking many different forms of a specific type of object. Two examples of said 'objects' would be metals or cheeses. when you throw many different types of cheese into a pot and heat it up to melt them(hence melting pot) they mix together and form something different from any of the original cheeses. The same idea is put into New York City and other large coastal U.S. cities back in the late 1800s to early 1900s, when Immigration to the United States was at its largest flow. So many different cultures and ethnicities were forced into such a small space that they inevitably mixed together and created a unique new culture only found in that region or country.

The term "melting pot" was used to refer to immigration to the United States. Supposedly, the immigrants laid aside their old identities as German, Swedes, Irish, Italians, Mexicans or whatever and became Americans, much as scrap metals in a furnace ceased to be cans, spoons, springs, etc. and became the alloy of something else.

The melting pot idea has been challenged by groups that wish to hold on to their cultural identities while remaining US residents. Others think this is a bad idea.

Inf you do mean melting pot, then it's just a bucket or an urn that you put stuff into and heat the pot until the contents melt and blend together.

If you mean melting point, that's the temperature where a substance changes from solid to liquid.

In sociological terms, "melting pot" refers to a place where people of many different backgrounds come together and adopt a basically uniform culture. The American Melting Pot was the US of the 18th, 19th and first half of the 20th century, when immigrants by and large wanted to adopt the culture they found on their arrival.

Which pattern of interaction is also called the salad bowl theory?

As the development of the New World progressed, we saw in emerging countries like Australia, the US, etc. inclusion of various ethic/nationalistic group, often en masse. In the US in particular, the phrase, "The Melting Pot" became popular. It referred to the idea that inclusion of these varied groups would have an effect metaphorically similar to what occurs when alloying a metal. E.g., the resultant alloy has strengths and properties that the mother elemental metals alone do not have. The inclusion and assimilation of the incoming immigrations into a cohesive whole was considered a good thing. However, during the 20th century and later, many of the arriviste's felt they were losing their national/ethnic identity, and steps have been taken in many cases to preserve that uniqueness. This approach was not well described by terms like Melting Pot. As such, another metaphor was sought. The result was the Salad Bowl concept, in which we have a resultant combination that is, as a whole, an improvement over its various components alone, but also maintains the concept of: Separate yet equal. The components of a salad are combined, yet remain discrete. This metaphor encompasses some aspects from Melting Pot, but not the level of assimilation we saw as a positive in Melting Pot.In American early-grade education, this term is the replacement for Melting Pot (which is no longer considered to be politically sensitive enough).
