There really isn't an easy definition to metaphysical poetry. To put it concisely, metaphysical poetry involves the study of the metaphysical, which includes the ideas of existence, occurrence, and causation. Metaphysical poets deal with these issues through wit, conceits, and discordia concurs. Conceits are long extended metaphors. Discordia concurs is the concept of finding similarities in two seemingly dissimilar objects. In a essay I wrote, I discussed that a primary component of metaphysical poetry is the use of alchemical elements to describe notions such as transformation and unity.

A form of Western poetry that was especially prevalent in the 1600s, metaphysical poetry is mainly characterized by the following characteristics: First, it was extremely witty, making clever use of words and concepts in an often esoteric fashion. Second, it sought (often, if not always) to illuminate and/or resolve grandiose metaphysical and spiritual questions through focus upon ordinary, even mundane, things from everyday life. Third, it tended to devote close attention to form as expressive of content in its own right; for example, constructing the lines of a poem about an altar such that it would appear on the page in the rough shape of an altar itself.
