Psychoanalysis is a type of insight therapy (a type of therapy that involves verbal interaction that is intended to enchance self-knowledge and promote healthful changes in one's personality and behaviour) that emphasizes the recovery of unconscious conflights, motives and defenses using techniques like

  • Free Association: this is where people would spontaneously express their thoughts and feelings exactly as they occur with little to no censorship; so essentially they could/woudl do anything from expound anything that comes to mind regardless of how stupid, embarassing or trivial it may be.
  • Transference: when people unconsciously start relating to their theapist in ways that copies (for a lack of a better word) their relationship with important people in their life; for example, they would treat their therapist as if the therapist was their overprotective mother and transfer the conflicting feelings to the therapist

(this was taught in one of my recent psychology lectures)
