Vocational education or vocational education and training (VET) prepares trainees for jobs that are based on manual or practical activities, traditionally non-academic, and totally related to a specific trade, occupation, or vocation.

Vocational education certification was a vocational qualification that used to be available in Further Education colleges and school sixth forms in the United Kingdom.

The word "vocation" originally meant "calling" and is related to words having to do with voices, like vocal, vocalize, evoke, and voice itself. Originally it meant a job you were called to by God, like a preacher or monastic. It was then extended to jobs which didn't pay particularly well but gave considerable job satisfaction. Finally, it has come to mean just "career".

And so "vocational" means having to do with a career.
