Murder is a crime--it is the deliberate killing of a person by another person. It is a form of homicide.

Homicide is any killing of a person by another person. If the killing is intentional and criminal, it is murder. However, some forms of homicide are not intentional, and some are not criminal acts. (For instance, if a person kills someone in self-defense, this is homicide but not murder.)

When you say slaughter, I think you perhaps mean manslaughter. This is a criminal form of homicide, but it is considered less serious than murder, for various reasons. The exact reasons why a homicide might be called manslaughter rather than murder are complicated, and they vary from place to place. Often, if the killing was not intentional, the killer will be charged with manslaughter, not murder.

(The word slaughter, by itself, usually refers to the killing of animals for food - i.e.: slaughtering cattle - slaughtering hogs.)

Is there violence in Mexico?

Yes; it has a homicide rate of 18 per 100,000 population. For comparison purposes, the United States has a homicide rate of 5 per 100,000 population. It should be noted however, that regional homicide rate wildly varies among states, as Mexico's northern states take the brunt of the Mexican War on Drugs. Therefore, you can find very dangerous areas such as Juarez with a murder rate of 229 people per 100,000 inhabitants, putting it as the second most dangerous city in the world. On the other hand, you can find states such as Baja California Sur, Yucatan and Hidalgo, with murder rates lower than 5 per 100,000 inhabitants. The state of Yucatan, home of the Chichen Itza ruins, has a murder rate of 1.72 per 100,000 inhabitants. This makes it much safer than say, Canada (2.1 murders per 100,000).
