What is the difference between an Anime cartoon and a normal cartoon?

Japanese anime and American Cartoons differ in many ways. The most noticeable one would be how they differ visually. Japanese anime style has more of a realistic look in characters, where as typically in American cartoons, many physical features are exaggerated. This is not true for all anime and cartoons. Many sci-fi anime's have a lot of creative exaggerations in the characters. Another good difference is that anime spends a lot of time with plot and character development. A typical American cartoon will have a story in one episode, whereas a anime will develop sometime complex character emotions (such as love triangles, drama, ect) over a period of 24 episodes (depending on the anime).

- For one, the drawing style, the most obvious difference. Think about Lois from Family Guy and compare her to the girl pictured in the link below. She is Konata Izumi, a stereo-typical anime girl, very cute with absurd-colored hair and big eyes.
- Second, the ages that it's meant for: cartoons are meant for kids. Anime can be for little kids, teens, and adults. It all depends on the genre.
- The typical style of anime is also different: for example, think about American shows of today- Family Guy, Spongebob, The Simpsons, etc. These excite watchers with humor. Anime revolves around much more than just humor; there can be super-natural things, slice-of-life kind of things, action, comedy of course, mecha, hentai, ecchi, yaoi, yuri.
There are still a few more differences, but I can't express them right. Sorry for a super long explanation, couldn't help it because I'm an otaku. :)
