Both Celsius and Fahrenheit are used to measure temperature, but they are different scales. The two scales use different temperature readings (different numerical values) for their reference points, which are the same two reference points - the freezing point and boiling point of water.

Water freezes at 0° C and boils at 100° C : there are 100 "degree" intervals.

Water freezes at 32° F and boils at 212° F : there are 180 "degree" intervals.

Degrees in Celsius are not the same size as degrees in Fahrenheit

- the Celsius degrees are much larger, equal to 1.8 (9/5) of a Fahrenheit degree.

°F to °C: Deduct 32, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9

°C to °F: Multiply by 9, then divide by 5, then add 32

Both Celsius and Fahrenheit are used to measure temperature, but they are different scales. The two scales use different temperature readings (different numerical values) for their reference points, which are the same reference points - the freezing point and boiling point of water. Water freezes at 0oC but freezes at 32oF. Water boils at 100 oC but boils at 212oF.

With this understanding, it remains only to figure out how to convert from one scale to the other. A link can be found below to the related question of conversion of one scale to the other. Celsius is the metric scale, Fahrenheit is the U.S. scale.

On Celsius scale: Water freezes at 0oC and boils at 100 oC

On Fahrenheit scale: Water freezes at 32oF and boils at 212oF

For testing the difference between degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit there is a little PC program for the temperature conversion. You find also the formulas there.

Scroll down to related links and look at "Conversion of Temperature Units".

F to C: Deduct 32, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9

C to F: Multiply by 9, then divide by 5, then add 32

What is th difference between celsius and fahrenheit?

The difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit is that in Celsius, the freezing point of water is 0 degrees Celsius and the boiling point is 100 degrees Celsius. In Fahrenheit, the freezing point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit and the boiling point of water is 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the ratio of 100 degrees celsius and 180 degrees Fahrenheit?

There are 100 Celsius "degrees" between the freezing and boiling points of water (0°C and 100°C). There are 180 Fahrenheit "degrees" between the freezing and boiling points of water (32°F and 212°F). This means that each Fahrenheit degree is a smaller interval, 100/180 or 5/9 the size of a Celsius degree. A Celsius degree is 9/5 (1.8) times as large as a Fahrenheit degree. This is why the differences between two temperatures is a smaller value when they are expressed in Celsius.

40 degrees fahrenheit is about 4.4 degrees celsius, while 10 celsius is 50 degrees fahrenheit so 40 fahrenheit is the colder temperature. The formulas to convert between celsius and fahrenheit temperatures (where F is the Fahrenheit temperature and C is the Celsius temperature in degrees) are as follows: Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = C × 9/5 + 32 Fahrenheit to Celsius: C = (F − 32) x 5/9
