SATA is............. This is one of the latest and popular developments. The high speed serialized AT attachment. Currently SATA offers ransfer speeds of upto 150Mbps. However, this technology can offer upto 600Mbps with further development. The next stage is increasing the speed to 300Mbps.

This is a popular term, it really should be called ATA - Advanced Technology Attachment. One of the earliest types. Also known as ATA-1. Data transfer rate of about 8Mbps (8 million bits per second). Basic differences are,

1) Speed (150mbps (SATA) vs 100/133mbps (PATA))

2) Air flow (large IDE cable vs thin SATA)

3) Hot swappable (SATA)

4) Newer technology with future speed increases promised.

IDE also known as ATA or PATA was the last generation interface of mainstream consumer hard drives.

SATA is the latest interface, sporting faster rates than the older IDE interface.

To prevent users from mismatching devices, SATA drives use a different connector.

SATA (Serial ATA) is better than the old IDE standard, which is actually PATA (Parallel ATA). The differences are not as significant as some others would have you believe, but SATA is a better standard for several reasons: The data cable for SATA devices is much smaller, yet carries data faster than their larger counterparts. A SATA connector has 7 pins, whereas a PATA connector has 40. The smaller cable size increases the potential for air flow within the computer case, which contributes to better cooling of the various internal components. The earliest SATA specification (SATA 150) can transfer data at 150 megabytes per second. A PATA cable can transfer data at 133 megabytes per second. There are more recent SATA specifications, the newest of which can reach speeds of over 500 megabytes per second. Unfortunately, the major limitation with both SATA and PATA is the drive itself, not the data transfer speeds. Both SATA and PATA drives use the same internal components, so the typical speeds for both technologies are similar.
