What is the difference between Ireland and Northern Ireland?

Ireland is the second largest of the two main islands which make up The British Isles.

It is divided:

The six North Eastern counties, called Northern Ireland, are part of the The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The southern part is The Republic of Ireland, a separate, sovereign country.
