What is the difference between LCD and OLED?

LCD is a display system that uses Liquid crystal liquid to create polarised dots on a sheet of glass in front of a polarised sheet. When a current is passed through the LCD its molecules line up and become polarised. When this is at 90 degrees to the polarise sheet it blocks light. A Fluorescent tube behind the sheet produces light which is blocked by the LCD when polarised.

Organic Light emitting diodes were invented when a Japanese scientist was trying to create a super light solar cell. One night he made a mistake and wired the panel up and put voltage through the organic compound he was testing. To his surprise it lit up. OLED displays use this active light generating technology. It has the advantage of being low current and high brightness. It can also be painted onto flexible surfaces to make ultra light weight flexible displays.

LCD displays do not emit light on their own. For that they need a backlight, which both raises power consumption and reduces the contrast ratio. Since there is always a backlight behind the set, pure, dark blacks are nearly impossible on an LCD display. OLED displays emit their own light without the need of a backlight, giving them a darker display with a greater contrast ratio. Another difference can be the price. OLED HDTV sets also cost more than their LCD counterparts. A 32-inch OLED set at Amazon has a retail price of $1,131 as of 2010. An LCD set that is the same size can range from $500 to $700. But in Long-term predictions, the price of OLED sets will decrease rapidly as they become more economical to produce.
