The difference between a major and a minor is with a major you will take more credit hours and you will get your degree in this field. With a minor, you take less credit hours, and if you want to take more later on you can eventually get a degree in your minor.

In baccalaureate education, your major degree indicates your main field of specialty. A minor is another area (such as political science, education, physics, etc) in which you have also taken a breadth of classes and are well versed in a subject. Majors require more classes than minors (typically 8 - 12 depending on the school), where as minors require fewer classes. When applying for jobs, most employers focus primarily on your major. Minor degrees typically are only an asset if you are fluent in a language (such as minoring in french and also demonstrating fluency) or if the minor is explicitly tied to your major (such as being a Political Science major and a public policy minor).
