To be fair, there are many, many different schools of thought as to what exactly Biz Dev should cover. A broad answer is that Sales is more tactical, whereas Biz Dev is more strategic.
Sales, for the most part, are simply the selling the product/service to the customer with a critical element being Client Management - development & maintenance of the relationship with the client before and after the deal is executed. Having done both roles in my career, Sales is typically a subset of Business Development.
